Binghamton Woman Sentenced to 18 Months for $25K Social Security Fraud!

2 min read

A 60-year-old woman from Binghamton, Loretta Washington, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for social security fraud.

She was found guilty of stealing more than $25,000 in social security benefits. Along with her prison sentence, Washington will be under supervised release for three years.

How the Fraud Was Committed?

Washington was acting as a representative payee for a minor child’s social security benefits. In September 2018, the Broome County Department of Social Services removed the child from her custody after finding the child wandering alone at night.

However, she did not inform the Social Security Administration about the custody change. Instead, she continued to collect benefits meant for the child and falsely claimed the child was still living with her.

Between October 2018 and November 2021, Washington illegally received social security payments, totaling over $25,000.

Legal Actions and Restitution

As part of her punishment, Washington must repay the full amount she took from the Social Security Administration.

The investigation was carried out by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Tuck prosecuted the case.
