Race Day Live (Pittsburgh, PA) – State Police are investigating an incident on Interstate 376 in which a car veered off the roadway, down the slope, and into the stream below.
The medical examiner identified the driver as Josh Willy, 49.
Willy was a renowned teacher in the Penn Hills neighborhood. According to the district, Willy worked as a social studies teacher and gifted coordinator.
A statement from the superintendent says the following:
“Josh was a deeply valued colleague and his tragic passing is felt by all of us. He was a wonderful teacher of AP World History and Honors Civics, and his work with our high school gifted students was exceptional. Please keep Josh’s family, friends, colleagues, and students in your thoughts and prayers.”
Willy leaves behind his wife and three children.

On Saturday afternoon, from noon to 3 p.m., Penn Hills High School will offer counseling services to families, students, and staff.
According to police, the crash occurred soon before 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Willy was driving his Mazda 3 hatchback westbound on the Parkway East when the vehicle veered off the road after exiting the Squirrel Hill Tunnel toward the Commercial Street Bridge and landed in the stream.
The medical examiner arrived on the site at 11 a.m.
A video from Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 showed the truck being pulled out of the water. The state police report could not identify a possible reason of the incident and stated that the inquiry was ongoing.
The Commercial Street Bridge is scheduled to be replaced in July 2026.
Aaron Birdy works for Upstream Pittsburgh, an environmental organization dedicated to the health of Nine Mile Run Creek. When Birdy stopped by the crash scene on Friday, he remembered how a Plum man was killed in a crash after his automobile exited the Parkway East off the Commercial Street Bridge in December.
“It’s just crazy. I think this is the second time this has happened, at least in my recent memory, and I just hope that when they replace this bridge, this issue will be fixed so this can’t happen again,” Birdy said.
