Colorado Woman Sentenced for Murdering Man She Falsely Accused of Being a Sex Offender Judge Cites ‘Unrestrained Hatred’

Police in Colorado say a woman who killed a guy she thought was a sex offender will spend the rest of her life in prison.

On August 21, Deka Simmons, 40, was found guilty of killing Daxcimo Ceja in 2022 and given a sentence of life in prison without the chance of parole. This was announced in a press statement from the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Ceja’s body was found in a drainage tunnel in Colorado Springs on October 5, 2023, inside a bag. This was after police received a tip from a stranger, as they had said before. The murder of Ceja was first investigated by police on March 30, 2022. Simmons was caught in April 2022 on a first-degree murder charge related to the case.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that Simmons killed Ceja, 48, in a garage after learning that he had a connection with a 17-year-old girl in California when he was 25. The news source says that prosecutors said Simmons “has an unrestrained hatred for anyone who would molest a child.” They also said that Simmons was afraid that her daughter would be a victim of sex trafficking.

At the sentence, Karen Fancher, Ceja’s mother, spoke in court. She told the judge, “[Ceja] was killed for something he did 24 years ago.” “[Simmons] won’t be out on the street hurting other people’s families like she has done all her life.”

Megan’s Law records found that Ceja was not listed as a convicted sex offender in California, where the claimed relationship took place. When PEOPLE asked the Office of the District Attorney for the Fourth Judicial District of Colorado for more information, they did not answer right away.

According to the news source, Simmons has been linked to three other murders but has only been charged with Ceja’s.

Simmons was also given an extra 24 years in prison for messing with a dead body and an extra three years for tampering with physical evidence. According to the judge’s order, she will serve her terms one after the other.
