Race Day Live Back in 2021, just a few weeks after taking office, President Joe Biden approved the American Rescue Plan Act to help Americans recover from the economic impact of COVID-19.
The relief package included $1.9 trillion in aid, covering expanded unemployment benefits, an enhanced Child Tax Credit, and the much-needed $1,400 Economic Impact Payments (EIP)—also known as stimulus checks.
This was the third round of stimulus payments, providing financial support to over 175 million eligible Americans.
While most received their payment automatically based on their tax filings, some who didn’t file tax returns had to claim it through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. Unfortunately, many missed out, either due to confusion or lack of awareness.
IRS is Now Sending Automatic Payments
If you never claimed your third stimulus payment, there’s good news! The IRS has reviewed its records and identified nearly one million taxpayers who are still owed their $1,400 payment.
Instead of making people file an amended return, the IRS is now sending these payments automatically.
“To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in a recent statement. If you’re eligible, you should receive your payment by the end of January 2024.
Who Qualifies for the $1,400 Stimulus?
The IRS will automatically send payments to those who:
- Filed a 2021 tax return but failed to claim the third stimulus check.
- Meet the income eligibility criteria (see below).
- Have a valid Social Security number and are U.S. citizens or qualifying residents.
If you already received your $1,400 stimulus check or claimed it through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, you will not receive an additional payment.
Who Won’t Get the Stimulus Check?
Some taxpayers won’t be eligible for this payment:
- Those who already received it in 2021.
- People who exceed the income limits (listed below).
- Anyone who never filed a 2021 tax return and doesn’t plan to.
If you haven’t filed a 2021 tax return yet, you still have time! The deadline to claim your stimulus check and any other refunds from that tax year is April 15, 2025.

Income Requirements for $1,400 Stimulus Eligibility
To qualify for the third Economic Impact Payment (EIP), you must meet the following income limits:
- Single filers: Less than $75,000 (phases out at $80,000).
- Head of Household: Less than $112,500 (phases out at $120,000).
- Married filing jointly: Less than $150,000 (phases out at $160,000).
If your income is above these limits, you will not receive the stimulus payment.
Final Deadline: Act Before It’s Too Late!
If you haven’t received your third stimulus check, make sure to file a 2021 tax return before April 15, 2025. After that date, you won’t be able to claim it anymore.
The IRS urges Americans to check their eligibility and claim their payments before time runs out. If you’re owed money, don’t leave it on the table!
