Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Supports Ranked Choice Voting in Michigan Ballot Push!

2 min read

Race Day Live Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced his support for a new ballot initiative to introduce ranked-choice voting in Michigan.

Duggan, who is running for governor as an Independent, believes the current election system promotes division rather than unity.

Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the votes, the one with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated.

The votes from eliminated candidates then go to the voters’ next choices, repeating until one candidate has a majority.

Supporters of this system say it encourages candidates to focus on common ground rather than attacking opponents. Duggan agrees, saying his campaign will focus on what he plans to do rather than attacking other candidates.

Duggan revealed that he has supported ranked-choice voting for decades.

He even wrote his senior thesis in 1980 arguing that presidential primaries should use this system. “I was ahead of my time,” he said during a speech at the Lansing Chamber of Commerce.

The group Rank MI Vote has been working on a proposal to change Michigan’s voting system. If approved, ranked-choice voting would not take effect until after the next gubernatorial election.

Duggan also commented on Michigan’s political divide, saying many voters feel neither major party truly represents them.

He pointed to dysfunction in the state government, including a legal battle between Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and the state House over legislative processes.

“I’m not running a campaign to attack anyone,” Duggan said. “I’ll debate my opponents when the time comes, but I won’t run negative ads. My campaign is about uniting Michigan.”

Polls suggest Michigan voters may be open to an independent governor. Duggan hopes his positive approach will show people that change is possible without negativity.

“People will decide if they want a new path or if they’re happy with the way things are,” he said.
