Race Day Live – A large swath of the United States was blasted with ice, snow, and wind on Monday as the polar vortex that dipped south over the weekend gripped much of the country east of the Rockies, making many roads treacherous, forcing school closures, and causing widespread power outages and flight cancellations.
Hugh Ross plowed a driveway in Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday, breaking through hard slabs of ice with his shovel. Frozen rain came on top of several inches (centimeters) of snow that arrived Sunday, and he claimed it “couldn’t have been worse.”
Ice and snow blanketed major routes in Kansas, western Nebraska, and parts of Indiana, prompting the National Guard to assist stranded motorists. According to the electric utility tracking website PowerOutage.us, more than 300,000 consumers lost power early Monday in Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for Kansas and Missouri, where blizzard conditions caused wind gusts of up to 45 mph (72 km/h). The warnings extended to New Jersey until early Tuesday.
The thoroughbreds were carried to their stalls at the renowned Calumet Farm in central Kentucky on Sunday afternoon, just as freezing rain turned their pastures into a slick sheen of snow and ice.

The polar vortex of ultra-cold air typically swirls around the North Pole, but it can occasionally escape and plummet southward into the United States, Europe, and Asia. According to studies, a rapidly warming Arctic is contributing to an increase in the frequency with which the polar vortex extends its icy grip.
Temperatures Drop
Starting Monday, the eastern two-thirds of the United States will experience bone-chilling cold and wind chills, according to forecasters. Temperatures may be 12 to 25 degrees (7 to 14 degrees Celsius) below normal.
The Northeast, which has had a relatively moderate start to the winter, is expected to see several days of cold, according to Jon Palmer, a weather service meteorologist stationed in Gray, Maine.
The frigid air was forecast to grip the Eastern Seaboard as far south as Georgia, with some coastal locations seeing temperatures in the low single digits (minus 15 to minus 17 Celsius), according to Palmer. Major southern cities, including New Orleans and Dallas, were braced for unusually cold temperatures.
