The San Francisco Giants are gearing up to welcome Blake Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, into their rotation.
According to manager Bob Melvin, Snell is scheduled to make his debut on Monday, April 8, against the Washington Nationals. Before that, Snell will participate in a simulated game on Wednesday, with a pitch count of around 70 pitches for his matchup against the Nationals.
Melvin expressed confidence that Snell will benefit from the simulated game, stating, “It just doesn’t feel like we’re there yet for him. So I think he’s gonna feel a lot better [after Wednesday].” He highlighted the importance of challenging Snell with different pitching scenarios to prepare him adequately for his debut.
Snell, 31, recently signed a two-year contract worth $62 million with the Giants on March 19, putting an end to his stint as a free agent. His contract includes an opt-out clause for the upcoming winter, allowing him flexibility in his future career decisions.
With an impressive track record, Snell boasts a 3.20 ERA and a 2.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 191 MLB appearances.
Joining an elite group of pitchers, Snell has secured Cy Young Awards in both the American and National Leagues, alongside renowned names like Gaylord Perry, Pedro Martinez, and Max Scherzer. Additionally, he has earned accolades as a two-time ERA champion and a one-time All-Star.
