LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – There are a few close races in the U.S. House of Representatives this November, and Speaker Mike Johnson knew that when he came to Las Cruces.
He quickly backed former Congresswoman Yvette Herrell in her bid for the 2nd Congressional District seat in New Mexico.
Herrell’s new campaign office in Las Cruces was packed with people when Johnson, R-Louisiana, spoke. “We came here to turn up the heat in this district.” “I’m so happy that Yvette is coming back into this battle.” She worked with us in Congress, and we need her back right away. She is brave, strong, and smart. She runs a small business and makes jobs.
For a short time, the speaker praised Herrell’s work in her home state and during her time in the House of Representatives. He called her “a friend and a sister.”
“She proved herself in the state legislature, and she did it again in Congress.” But this is a tough area, right? “They think the 2nd District of New Mexico is a “toss-up” district, but we’re going to show them they’re wrong,” he said.
Herrell is running against GOP U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez because she lost to him two years ago when the state legislature, which was controlled by Democrats, changed her district to include Albuquerque.
The district is considered to be close by many national polls and experts, such as the Cook Political Report and Inside Elections. As of August 16, the most positive poll for Republicans showed that they were still two seats short of the 218 seats they needed to control the House. In that one too, too, NM-02 is a close race.
Vasquez was still positive about being a part of his party’s plans for the future of the United States on Wednesday.
Border Report talked to him at a trade meeting in Sunland Park, New Mexico. “The future of our country is at stake,” he said. A word of hope for a better future for Americans is being spread by Democrats in Chicago. […] In my case, it’s a job that I’ve chosen; I’ve joined the public service. So, it’s very important for people in New Mexico to vote for someone who has worked hard and been able to deliver for this area, like me.
Herrell’s campaign is getting help from the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is filling her “Battle Station” campaign office on Solano Drive.
Herrell thanked the speaker for his support on Wednesday and talked about supporting American energy production, regaining the “moral high ground” on American principles, and following immigration laws.
“Right now in our country, people are burning American flags and yelling “Death to America!” It’s not fair that people in our country who served and died for our freedom had to deal with that. His words, “This is where we are at.”
The two of them spoke out against the Biden administration’s actions and words, which they say caused a huge increase in illegal immigrants over the last three and a half years. In doing so, they brought up concerns that undocumented immigrants might be able to vote in U.S. elections, get government benefits, or be a security threat, which Democrats have strongly criticized.
“I think about 16 million people crossed the border illegally during Biden-Harris.” Not as many as they say, but Johnson said, “I’ve been to the border a lot.” Border Patrol tells us that about 70% of those who have crossed are single men between the ages of 18 and 45. These are not families being persecuted who need refuge; these are dangerous people.
Some loyal Republicans who went to Johnson’s visit think that immigration is one of the problems that will cause the district to change hands.
“The border crisis is the most important thing.” “Open borders radical policies backed by Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Gabe Vasquez are making the crisis crazy,” said state Rep. John Block, R-Alamogordo. “Every day, you can see how hard the economy is on families.”
