Iconic New Jersey Fine-Dining Spot Shuts Down, Citing Pandemic Impact and Failed Sale

Race Day Live (Morristown, PA) – Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen, the upscale eatery by James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Cannon in Morristown, has shut its doors. The restaurant shared the update on its Instagram page Thursday.

Cannon pointed to changes in dining preferences following the COVID-19 pandemic and an unsuccessful attempt to sell the restaurant as reasons for its closure. The restaurant closed its doors for good on New Year’s Eve.

Opened in 2014, Jockey Hollow is situated within the historic Vail Mansion, a grand estate that towers over Morristown, providing an impressive backdrop for dining. While some restaurants rely solely on their atmosphere, Jockey Hollow’s food truly matched its elegant setting — a place that successfully made fine dining accessible, even for those new to the culinary scene.

Cannon’s eatery has perfected a diverse menu that includes smash burgers, street tacos, squid ink pappardelle, and prime filet mignon, securing the No. 5 position on NJ.com’s ranking of the top restaurants in Morristown.

The restaurant shut its doors for a time in November 2020 due to the pandemic, facing declining business, before making a comeback in 2021. As restaurants fully reopened that year, Cannon began to notice shifts in the dining habits of New Jersey residents.

People were going out to eat less often and not staying out as late as they used to.

Cannon mentioned that increasing staff wages to encourage a return to work post-COVID contributed to Jockey Hollow’s challenges. The increase in ready-to-eat meals available at grocery stores, along with delivery platforms such as GrubHub and Uber Eats, has intensified competition for restaurants.

The chef suggested that it could be the mid-range, upscale yet not overly extravagant restaurants that face challenges in 2025.
