If you think the Texas Longhorns will fall in the College Football Rankings on Tuesday after a close win on the road, you’re wrong.
The Horns didn’t beat Arkansas, but they did their job against an old rival on the road in a tough setting, so they should stay at No. 3 this week.
One of my top four choices is different from last week. Following their 16–13 win at Wisconsin, Oregon is still ranked first. After beating Northwestern 31–7, Ohio State is in second place. Penn State goes up to No. 4 after beating Purdue 49–10 and Tennessee losing 31–17 to Georgia.
There are three Big Ten teams in the top four, but only one can get a bye in the first round. Also, if these ranks are correct, the Horned Horns would move up to the No. 2 seed, while Ohio State and Tennessee would drop to No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
The Horns beat the Hogs 20–10 to record their ninth win in a row and their fifth win in a row in SEC play. Even though they need to work on their passes and defense, they have a great chance to make it to the SEC championship game if they beat Kentucky and Texas A&M in the last two games of the season.
The Wildcats had lost four games in a row before beating FCS club Murray State 48–6. Texas is a 21-point favorite over them. You can bet on the Aggies to win by 3½ points at Auburn.

How many teams are in the 2024 College Football Playoff?
For the first time this season, there are 12 teams in the College Football Playoff. The CFP started in 2014 with only four teams.
It is planned that there will be 12 teams in college football in 2024 and 2025. So far, leaders in the sport haven’t agreed on anything else about the playoff structure.
How does the College Football Playoff work?
The 12 teams that will play in the College Football Playoff are the five conference winners that the CFP selection committee ranks as the best, plus the next seven best teams in the rankings.
The top four teams in each league will be seeded one through four and will not have to play in the first round. The fifth conference winner will be seeded at the same spot it was ranked or at No. 12 if it is not in the top 12 in the CFP rankings. Teams that won a championship outside of their league will be seeded from No. 5 to No. 4.
The CFP says on its website, “Because of this, the seeding, 1 through 12, could look different from the final rankings.”
The better-ranked team in each pair (5 vs. 12; 6 vs. 11; 7 vs. 10; 8 vs. 9) will host the first round on campus. The winners move on to the quarterfinals, where they will play the top-four conference champion from the other team’s draw. On New Year’s Eve and Day, quarterfinal games will be played at the Fiesta Bowl, the Peach Bowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl. They will be held at the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl Classic on January 9 and 10.
The winners of the two semifinals will play for the national title on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
