Major Showdown: Red State AG Challenges Local Governments Resisting ICE!

3 min read

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is preparing to take legal action against two local governments in his state that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

These jurisdictions are resisting President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts targeting illegal immigrants.

“This is a problem in Indiana because there is a state law that I enforce, which says that state or local law enforcement must provide all cooperation allowed by federal law,” Rokita told Fox News Digital. “Now, I need to investigate this defiance.”

Local Authorities Refuse to Assist ICE

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) have publicly stated they will not assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with deportation efforts.

IMPD Chief Chris Bailey clarified that local police have no authority to enforce federal immigration laws and will not participate in immigration sweeps.

IPS officials also announced that ICE agents would not be allowed on school property without a criminal warrant.

Rokita Warns of Legal Consequences

Rokita criticized local leaders and officials for not following the law.

“Some elected officials and employees seem to think they can make their own laws instead of following existing ones,” Rokita said.

He warned both IPS and IMPD to comply with federal immigration enforcement or face potential lawsuits from his office.

Prior Legal Action Against Non-Compliant Authorities

This is not the first time Rokita has taken legal action against jurisdictions refusing to cooperate with ICE. Last month, he sued the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department and its sheriff, William Redman.

The lawsuit alleges that between March and September 2024, the sheriff’s office ignored nine ICE detainer requests.

These detainers allow ICE to hold individuals suspected of being in the country illegally. By refusing to honor them, local authorities allegedly obstructed ICE’s enforcement efforts.

Ongoing Disputes With Indiana Institutions

Rokita also criticized Indiana University and a local sheriff’s office for refusing to assist federal immigration authorities.

“We’re going to court, and I plan to get an injunction against their refusal to follow the law,” he said.

Trump Administration’s Immigration Crackdown Continues

President Trump’s ICE operations have intensified across the country. Just last weekend, ICE agents detained 700 illegal immigrants, with 500 of them having prior convictions or charges, according to a senior official from the Trump administration.

The legal battle between federal and state officials highlights ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement, particularly in states with resistance to federal policies.

As Rokita pushes for stricter compliance, the outcomes of these legal disputes could have significant implications for local law enforcement and immigration policy in Indiana.
