Race Day Live (Dallas, TX) – An East Texas man received a 99-year prison sentence on Tuesday following a series of legal troubles related to drug offenses.

Benjamin Clark’s legal issues began in May 2023 when authorities were alerted to his parole status while he was allegedly involved in drug dealing in Diana. Upshur County Narcotics Officers initiated a traffic stop when Clark neglected to signal with his blinker.

Officers were prompted to search the vehicle after a K9 unit reportedly signaled an alert. Authorities allegedly discovered multiple concealed storage areas filled with methamphetamine and mushrooms. Clark faced arrest and charges for having a controlled substance, but he was subsequently released from jail on bond.

In May 2024, he found himself in trouble once more when DPS took him into custody for possession after a traffic stop.

Clark’s trial commenced on August 5, 2024, with the district attorney presenting 15 previous convictions dating back to 1985. The DA’s office reported that nine of the convictions were felonies, leading to Clark receiving sentences in both federal and state prison.

As a result of Clarks previous offenses, the state has submitted a notice of enhancement, mandating that Clark receive either a life sentence or a term ranging from 25 to 99 years. On Tuesday, a jury delivered a verdict of guilty against Clark for possession of a controlled substance as a habitual offender, resulting in a sentence of 99 years in prison.

“The jury gave this sentence due to Clark receiving several opportunities of probation, county jail, prison and parole to fix his life decisions- nothing stopped him from continuing to break the law,” according to the DA office. “The jury rejected the defense’s argument for the minimum sentence of 25 years.”
