A precautionary recall has been issued for 12-ounce bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart locations across 20 states, including Michigan, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall, announced by Braga Fresh last week, follows a voluntary and precautionary notice regarding the broccoli product. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen capable of causing “serious and sometimes fatal infections,” especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Health Risks and Symptoms
The FDA advisory, released on Tuesday, emphasized the severity of listeria infections, which can result in high fever, intense headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. For pregnant women, the infection poses even greater risks, including miscarriages and stillbirths.
Distribution and Consumer Advisory
The recalled broccoli was distributed exclusively at Walmart and sold across the following states:
- Alaska
- Arkansas
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Michigan
- Montana
- Nevada
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Texas
- Utah
- Washington
- Wyoming
Braga Fresh confirmed that the affected broccoli is beyond its recommended usage date and is no longer available in stores. However, consumers who may have stored the product in their freezers are urged to dispose of it immediately.
No Illnesses Reported
As of now, no illnesses have been linked to the recalled product. Consumers with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Braga Fresh or their local Walmart store for further information.
This advisory highlights the importance of food safety and vigilance in monitoring for potential contamination risks.
