New York Bill Seeks to Require Teaching of January 6th Capitol Riots in All Schools!

3 min read

Race Day Live A lawmaker from New York has introduced a bill that could make teaching about the January 6th Capitol riots a requirement in all schools across the state.

The proposed bill, introduced by New York State Assemblymember Charles Lavine, aims to ensure that K-12 students are taught about the insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and its consequences.

Lavine, who represents the 13th Assembly District in Nassau County, said the bill was introduced in response to the ongoing efforts by former President Donald Trump to downplay the events of that day.

In a statement from Lavine’s office, it was noted that the bill was necessary because Trump’s actions, including pardoning those involved in the riot, have been seen as an attempt to erase or minimize the significance of the attack on the Capitol.

“The proposed change to the education law comes in response to President Trump’s unceasing efforts to whitewash what is one of the most disgraceful episodes in our nation’s history,” Lavine’s office told Hudson Valley Post.

“One of Trump’s first actions in his second stint as president was to pardon those responsible for violently attempting to upend our democracy and the peaceful transition of power.”

The bill would mandate that New York’s 12 public schools teach about the January 6th riots and its aftermath, helping students learn about the violent events and their impact on American democracy.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., trying to stop Congress from officially certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.

The chaos forced lawmakers to halt the certification process as rioters broke into the Capitol building, clashed with police, and caused widespread damage.

Images from that day, which showed protesters scaling walls, breaking windows, and wreaking havoc inside the Capitol, shocked the nation and led to numerous arrests.

The attack has since been seen as a direct challenge to the peaceful transition of power, a cornerstone of American democracy.

While this bill would make the teaching of the January 6th events mandatory in New York schools, the proposal is still in the early stages and has yet to pass through the full legislative process.

If the bill is passed, it would be a significant step toward ensuring that students across New York understand the significance of the events that unfolded that day.

Lavine’s office has stated that the goal of the bill is to ensure that future generations of students learn the lessons from January 6th, including the importance of protecting democracy and the dangers of political violence.

If the bill passes, it could be a major milestone in how schools across the U.S. address the events that shook the nation in 2021.
