Oklahoma Woman Arrested for Alleged Knife Threat and Attempted Arson at Senior Center

Race Day Live  (Oklahoma City, OK) – An Oklahoma woman was apprehended following allegations that she intimidated a resident of a senior center with a knife and attempted to detonate his oxygen machine.

Marketta Bates, aged 33, was apprehended on January 20 following an occurrence that transpired on the same day at the Jeltz Senior Center in Oklahoma City. As per a police report acquired by KOKH, a local Fox affiliate, law enforcement officials responded to reports of an assault occurring at the facility. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bates situated in a communal area amidst a tumultuous situation.

The purported victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, informed law enforcement that Bates brandished a knife at him subsequent to her threat to ignite his oxygen tank. Law enforcement officials observed the purported victim’s oxygen canister on the ground in proximity to him, from which liquid was leaking.

In the bodycam footage recorded by one of the officers, Bates is heard articulating that she was visiting a family member at the facility. She also permitted the police to conduct a search of her person while they restrained her with handcuffs and escorted her out of the building.

The report indicated that when questioned regarding the possession of any weapons, she disclosed to the police that there was a knife in her purse, which the authorities subsequently located.

The police report indicated that the purported victim informed the officers that he was engaged in the sale of clothing in the communal area when Bates confronted him regarding her mother’s allegedly stolen phone. He stated that when he attempted to soothe her, she allegedly became agitated, resulting in the onset of an argument. It has also been reported that she raised her voice at other residents present in the vicinity.

The altercation intensified when Bates purportedly threatened to ignite the individual’s oxygen canister. He promptly removed the respiration tubes that were attached, while other residents endeavored to intervene and prevent Bates from proceeding.

It has been reported that she forcefully struck the oxygen canister against the ground before subsequently turning her attention to a garbage receptacle, which she purportedly endeavored to ignite.

The individual subsequently stated that Bates executed slashing gestures towards her with a knife.

Law enforcement officials examined the security footage and were able to corroborate the account provided by the putative victim, with the exception of the presence of the knife.

Upon their arrival, law enforcement apprehended Bates and subsequently charged her with attempted arson as well as assault and battery with a hazardous weapon. She was admitted to the Oklahoma County Detention Center under a bond of $10,000.
