Race Day Live (Maricopa County, AZ) – An Indiana man has been arrested for shooting his pregnant estranged wife in the back. She was 5 months along, and the attack badly hurt her and caused the death of the baby, according to authorities.
The Indianapolis police arrived at a shooting incident on Sunday around 6 p.m. in the 700 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway. Officers found 25-year-old Kayla Netherland in the bathroom with shooting wounds. Paramedics quickly took her to the hospital. Doctors managed to stabilize her, but they could not save the child.
A police document says that just before the killing, a friend of Netherland’s came over to do laundry and entered the house. She said she saw Jeremy McBride, 36, who is her separated husband, standing over her. McBride glanced at his friend and then walked out the front door without saying anything, according to the police. The friend told the cops that she thought McBride was responsible for Netherland’s death. Officers used license plate readers to find McBride and stopped him.
McBride exited the car, which rolled away because it wasn’t in park and crashed into a pole, according to officials. He reportedly told the officer, “I was going to turn myself in at the police station,” and mentioned that the gun was in the car. He reportedly asked, “Is she okay?” Police reportedly found a gun and handwritten notes about his relationship with his divorced wife in the car.

“McBride wrote to [Netherland] of his frustrations with her infidelity, his frustrations with their failed relationship, his anger & insecurities which led him to mistreat others, his belief that he has not ‘molded’ himself into an individual [she] would want to have children with, and that he had wanted children with her,” detectives wrote.
Post Miranda, the defendant told detectives he was upset that while they hadn’t gotten divorced “yet she had gotten pregnant” by another man, according to the statement. The marriage was struggling, and they split up in September, but he still thought they could reunite.
“Maybe she will come back one day, but not for me. But in many ways, I killed her,” McBride allegedly wrote.
He is said to have bought a gun and bullets a few days before the shooting, planning to kill her, the baby, and himself. McBride said he and Netherland had been hanging out on Sunday, shopping at Goodwill before going back to her house to hang out. The statement stated that they were talking to her in the bathroom while he was sitting on the bed. He allegedly said that shooting her “made sense at the time,” so he shot her five times in the back. He said she never saw him shoot.
“Certainly what is alleged is this person went to great lengths to carry out what he intended to do,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.

Police say Netherland had at least two surgeries: one to remove the fetus and another to fix her internal damage. She is still at the hospital. McBride is being held at the Marion County Jail without a chance to post bail. He is facing charges for trying to kill someone and for harming a fetus.
