Scorned Boyfriend Who Slit Ex-Girlfriend’s Throat After Breakup Sentenced

After a breakup, an Ohio man broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house and stabbed her 30 times, cutting her throat to “speed up the process.” He was given a life term.

Wednesday, Chance Donohoe, 27, was given a life sentence in jail with the chance of parole after 31 years for killing Shannon Hiott, 29. Police said in a news statement that he pleaded guilty last month to aggravated murder and gross abuse of a corpse.

The Columbus Dispatch said that Hiott’s mother, Jamie Hiott, yelled at the suspect in court.

Donohoe’s lawyer wrote a sentencing letter asking for a lighter sentence. He said that Donohoe was high on marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, and a lot of alcohol at the time of the murder.

In a letter attached to the sentencing memo, his mother, Ashley Radca, said that her son has had a hard life. For example, he was raised by a single mother without a biological father, and he has been in and out of therapy since he was 5.

She wrote, “I will never fully understand how my son was able to do the horrible things he did the night he killed Shannon.” “He had never done anything like that before. It was way out of character.” The things he did were beyond awful, and he needs to be punished for them.

Hiott died on August 29. Prosecutors say Donohoe broke into her home in the 1400 block of Berkeley Road in Columbus and stabbed her. The Columbus Dispatch said she had been stabbed 30 times.

NBC station WCMH said that after being stabbed, he ran away to his mother’s house in Powell, which is about 20 miles north. In a news release, officials said that he called 911, admitted what he did, and turned himself into the cops.

Vice Franklin County Prosecutor Dan Lenert told the Dispatch, “I can only imagine what was going through Shannon’s mind as he broke down her door and began stabbing her.” “He told the police that he cut her throat to make things go faster.” This person is angry, and not high on drugs like ketamine, methamphetamine, or cocaine. Lana Hiott, the victim’s sister, told WSYX, a local ABC/FOX station, that Donohoe had stolen food and medicine from her and that she had told him to leave a week earlier.
