A dramatic new video has been published showing how a quick-thinking police officer and a Good Samaritan saved a sleeping man from possible death after he slid off a bridge in Oklahoma.
The heart-pounding footage, captured on an Oklahoma City Police Department officer’s bodycam, shows the officer arriving at the scene to check on the man, who is lying flat on his back on a concrete guardrail in the early light at roughly 9 a.m. on Nov. 10. The bridge spans the Oklahoma River, connecting Stockyards City Main Street to Oklahoma City via Exchange Avenue.
Officer Reyes steps out of his truck and approaches the man, who is clad in a red hoodie and trousers.
As the officer approaches, the man can be seen shifting his legs before abruptly turning to his right and slipping off the guardrail.
That’s when Reyes jumps into action, grabbing the man’s sweater as his feet hang above the frigid waters below.
A passing jogger arrives at the incident and assists Reyes in grabbing the man’s arms. The man can be heard groaning audibly as he hangs perilously from the bridge for a few seconds, looking forth.
“Hey sir, come on,” Reyes can be heard saying, while the Good Samaritan inquires, “You all right, bud?” You okay?”
They then pull him to safety by hauling him back over the guardrail and onto the bridge.
The Oklahoma City Police Department says a medical team examined the individual and decided he was unharmed.
According to Oklahoma City Police Msgt. Gary Knight, the guardrail is roughly a foot wide and the drop to the water below is between 30 and 40 feet.
“It’s a real hero type thing you see an officer spring into action – save someone’s life with the help of a citizen,” Knight told the crowd.
According to News9, the man told authorities he had no intention of injuring himself and that he fell asleep due to the good weather while resting.
According to police, Reyes gave him a lift back to his family, and he is not homeless.
