There are two kinds of disability payments in the US. One is for workers who have been unable to work for more than a year because of a condition that meets the strict meaning of disability. There are two benefits that you can get from Social Security, but only if you meet their strict meaning of disability. If you want to get SSDI, a weekly payment, you have to work enough hours and meet certain conditions.
But you might still be able to get SSI if you haven’t been able to work enough because of your handicap. That’s Supplemental Security Income, which can be given to both adults and children who get it.
Americans on disability payments will be the first to get a COLA
As per the Social Security Administration (SSA), the COLA will come first for people who get SSI. The cost-of-living increase will be added to their disability payment in 2024.
People who get SSDI will get it in January 2025. It doesn’t make a difference, but it would be better to get your disability payment with the new COLA as soon as possible.
However, disability users and retirees will have to wait until October 10, 2024, for the COLA increase to show up in their bank accounts or mailboxes.
Dates for when your COLA will go up if you get disability benefits
The 2025 COLA raise will be given to people who get SSI on December 31, 2024. This means that they will get their cash one day early, on January 1, 2025. When the government is closed for a holiday, SSA sends money on the business day before.
Remember that the first people who get SSDI and get the 2025 COLA will be those who get paid on the third. To get the increase in the COLA on January 3, 2025, they must have been getting disability payments before May 1997.
Disability payments will go up with the cost of living on January 8, 15, and 22 after this paycheck. People who get SSDI and whose birthday is between January 21 and December 31 will have to wait longer to get their COLA raise.
