SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — A 35-year-old man was refused bond Thursday night for another murder he recently admitted to committing two years ago. He is being charged in a murder in Summerville this week.
Roger Lavar Smalls was arrested Thursday morning for the murder of 71-year-old Priscilla Ann Yager. The Moncks Corner Police Department said they had enough proof to charge him with the murder of Susie Kochever in 2022.
MCPD also said that Smalls was a suspect in Kochever’s death from the start.
He was also charged with spreading obscene material after it was found that he had sent an unsuitable picture of a female neighbor. Kolever’s sister was at his bond hearing on Thursday night.
“I just want him to know that he took away a wonderful person.” She was a mom, grandma, and sister. “I just hope he never gets out and hurts someone else,” she said.
Smalls asked Kochever’s family to forgive him at the meeting.
“I picked to use drugs and do what I did.” “It was my pleasure to tell her I was sorry,” Smalls said. “I understand that I can’t bring her loved one back, but I want her to know that I’m sorry and agree with everything she says. Please forgive me.”
As soon as Smalls was caught, News 4 asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for his criminal record. His record goes back to 2009.
Giving false information to police in 2014, second-degree domestic violence, and having cocaine in 2022 are some of the claims.
He was charged with assault and battery in the first degree, having a weapon during a violent crime, and armed robbery with a dangerous weapon in October 2022.
He was charged with assault and battery in the second degree in 2023.
Police from Summerville and Moncks Corner held a joint news conference on Thursday. At the time of Yager’s murder, Smalls was on probation, according to Summerville police. To answer for both charges, he will have to go to a different judge eventually.
