Surprise Discovery: Coyote Pups Found Under Deck in Pacific Beach

2 min read

In North Pacific Beach, locals have noticed a coyote wandering around the neighbourhood for a few weeks. This led some residents to put up signs warning others, while others shared alerts on social media platforms.

As it turns out, the coyote was pregnant, and recently, her four pups were found under a family’s deck. Concerned for their safety, the family decided to capture the pups and take them to the San Diego Humane Society. From there, the pups were transported to the Ramona Wildlife Center.

According to Campus Director Andy Blue, the pups seem to be about three weeks old and are in good health. They’re currently being bottle-fed several times a day and are expected to be released back into the wild once they can fend for themselves.

While these pups are doing well, Andy advises against removing healthy baby animals from their environment. Often, if left alone, their mothers will move them to a safer location if there’s any disturbance.

Seeing a coyote in your neighbourhood can be concerning, but Andy suggests simple ways to deter them. Making yourself appear larger, waving a jacket, or any action to startle them can be effective.

Keeping pets on a leash and avoiding feeding wildlife is also recommended to prevent attracting unwanted animals.

As for the mother coyote, since she doesn’t appear to be injured, the Humane Society doesn’t plan to trap her. Eventually, she is expected to return to a nearby canyon area on her own.
