Race Day Live (PUNTA GORDA, FL) – Travelers exploring the west coast of Florida may discover the charming beach town of Punta Gorda, located almost two hours south of Tampa.
When visiting Punta Gorda, you might overlook one of its most significant local highlights: a historic drinking fountain situated right in the heart of downtown.
At first glance, the fountain may seem ordinary, but over the years, locals have affectionately referred to it as the “Fountain of Youth.”
Historical newspaper pieces recount stories from community members asserting that the fountain has rejuvenated and invigorated them. The demand was so high that individuals found themselves queuing for a chance to enjoy a beverage.
Although we can’t definitively say if this is the same spring that the legendary explorer Ponce De Leon sought after in the early 1500s, one fact remains clear.
The fountain is radioactive.
NPR reports that health officials found elevated radium levels in the well water during tests conducted in the 1980s. In particular, the measurement reached approximately 9 picocuries, which is twice the advised limit set by federal standards.
Despite discussions about its potential closure, the fountain’s popularity compelled officials to ensure it remains accessible to the public.
The Florida Department of Health has placed a notice on the drinking fountain that states the following:
However, regardless of the warning, you can feel confident that a quick drink is unlikely to lead to cancer.
“Well, that sign may be scary, but it seems a little bit of radioactivity might not be all bad…” U.S. Geological Survey researcher Zoltan Szabo told NPR back in 2013. “If that was your drinking water, and that was the only source of water you had, and you drank it for 70 years — even then, you’d only have the one in 20,000 risk.”
According to NPR, the well water could have a compound — magnesium sulfate — that may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and enhance respiratory health.
The drawback? The presence of magnesium sulfate results in an unpleasant odor in the water.
