The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security stated Saturday that three convicts would face charges in connection with a violent attack on corrections personnel at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center earlier this month.
The incident, which occurred about 6:20 p.m., sent five cops to the hospital, including one who was “repeatedly stabbed about 12 times,” according to police.
The breathtaking footage shows an offender swinging at an unsuspecting officer’s head. Moments later, another convict joins in the assault.
The scuffle lasts for almost a minute until other officers arrive.
According to officials, the jailed persons stabbed two corrections officers many times, and three more corrections officers were hurt while reacting to the assault.
“Attacks on our officers will not be tolerated, and the serious charges filed against the three individuals show that the Massachusetts Department of Correction will take action,” interim Commissioner Shawn Jenkins said Saturday. “This form of violence is reprehensible, and those who perpetrated it will now face legal consequences. We have and will continue to prioritize the safety and health of our Correctional Officers, and we value their service to the DOC and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. “Our investigators have worked tirelessly since the incident occurred to bring these charges forward.”
A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union praised the Worcester District Attorney’s Office for the inquiry and requested that the Department of Correction increase security measures.
“We demand the DOC take action to make the prisons more secure by clearing out the deadly weapons and drugs that are too prevalent in our system,” according to the union’s statement. “Our focus remains on the safety of everyone in the prison system, including our brothers and sisters of MCOFU.”
