Las Vegas — Police detained a woman for allegedly stealing $200,000 in jewelry and other goods from two tourists after she drove a car on the Las Vegas Strip while intoxicated and without a license plate, according to 8 News Now investigators.
Cassandra Tovar, 31, was detained after a traffic check on the Las Vegas Strip on Friday, September 6, police said. An officer stopped Tovar after observing she was driving without a license plate and appeared inebriated. While reviewing Tovar’s information, officers discovered she was sought for theft and other counts.
According to documents, a guy called the police on April 23, 2023, to report that he had been the victim of a theft. The man claimed he and another male were staying at the MGM Signature Towers when they met three women at a bar and then went to their room.
According to the documents, one of the ladies “proposed [one of the men] for sexual intercourse and stated it was $1,000 each,” while the victim stated that he told her he was not paying for sex. They proceeded to talk outside on the balcony, and [one woman] offered him a drink in a shot glass. They encouraged the victim to consume it. After drinking it, he reported that he passed out and had no memory of anything else.
When the men awoke, they discovered that all of their jewelry and other belongings had gone vanished. A toxicology test later revealed “various controlled substances” in the sample.
Police discovered surveillance footage and a car registered to one of the women, they added. The woman then acknowledged to drinking with the men and stole their jewelry.
Police discovered many high-end watches, diamond jewelry, and apparel inside the woman’s home, according to reports. After arresting the woman, authorities identified Tovar as a potential second suspect in the theft.
The police sought to contact Tovar but were unable. A court then approved a warrant for her arrest.
During Tovar’s first court appearance, Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Daniel Westmeyer set his bond at $20,000. Tovar remains detained at the Clark County Detention Center as of Thursday. A preliminary hearing was planned in November.
According to records, prosecutors did not pursue any charges in connection with Tovar’s traffic stop. Two more women have been charged in connection with the theft in 2023.
