Tragic Plane Crash at Wright Brothers National Memorial Leaves Multiple Dead

MANTEO, North Carolina — A single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area at Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport on Saturday afternoon, killing multiple persons, according to the National Park Service.

According to eyewitnesses, the jet crashed at about 5 p.m. while attempting to land at the airport, according to a news release from the Park Service.

The park service said that the jet caught fire following the collision. The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other area fire agencies extinguished the fire.

The park service announced that the airport will be closed until further notice.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the event. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been contacted.

The park administration said that the Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday.
