Race Day Live On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders that have sparked criticism, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community.
Among the most controversial is a directive that mandates the government to officially recognize only two sexes—male and female—based solely on biological definitions.
The order also calls for an end to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within federal agencies, labeling them as “radical and wasteful.”
The gender-focused order claims it aims to protect women’s rights and uphold clear policies by defining men and women biologically. However, this stance challenges broader interpretations of gender identity, creating immediate backlash from advocates for transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals.
Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Executive Director of the Advocates for Transgender Equality (A4TE), criticized the orders, describing them as a deliberate attempt to undermine the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.
He called the policies part of a broader effort by “hateful extremists” to erase the identities of those who do not conform to traditional gender norms.
“These orders are not about protecting anyone—they are about denying the lived realities of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people,” said Heng-Lehtinen.
“They make it harder for us to access basic needs like healthcare, education, and public spaces. This is an attack on our existence, but we will not be erased.”
Heng-Lehtinen also warned of the broader implications of such policies. He highlighted that strict gender definitions harm not only transgender individuals but also cisgender women and girls, as they impose rigid roles and expectations.
“This isn’t just a trans issue—it’s a human rights issue. When you try to box people into narrow categories, everyone suffers.”

The orders have fueled a national debate, with equality groups demanding their repeal. Critics argue that these policies not only dismiss the experiences of marginalized communities but also set a dangerous precedent by limiting diversity and inclusion in public life.
For many advocates, this fight is far from over. “We are here, and we will keep fighting for a world where everyone is recognized, respected, and free to live authentically,” Heng-Lehtinen added.
Trump’s administration has faced criticism in the past for targeting LGBTQ+ rights, and these latest measures have reignited tensions across the country.
As the debate continues, equality advocates are calling for unity and urging leaders to stand against these policies.
