Race Day Live A lot of people in Florida remember big events with T-shirts. Looking back at them is like flipping through a photo album.
Tom Petty Concert 1995! Gasparilla Parade 2001! Crystal River Manatee Festival 2009! But no one ever made T-shirts for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
That disaster left Florida’s beaches covered in thick, brown oil, damaging marine life and the economy for years.
Now, history might repeat itself. Right after being sworn in, Donald Trump signed several executive orders. One of them removed an oil drilling ban put in place by Joe Biden, opening Florida’s Gulf Coast for new oil leases.
His order claims there is a “national energy emergency,” even though oil companies made record profits under Biden.
Trump’s decision allows offshore drilling with no exceptions, not even for the Florida Panhandle, which suffered most from the 2010 oil spill.
The last time Florida’s Gulf waters were protected from drilling, it was actually because of Trump. In 2020, he extended a drilling ban until 2032.
But now, he’s reversing his policy. Environmental groups call this move hypocritical and dangerous. Even some Florida politicians, like Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, oppose the new order. Luna, a strong Trump supporter, still believes Florida’s waters should remain untouched.

Despite Trump’s push, oil companies aren’t rushing in. They’ve already made huge profits and aren’t in a hurry to expand offshore drilling.
One industry leader even told The New York Times that while he likes Trump’s energy policies, it’s “too early to say” if companies will start drilling in the eastern Gulf.
For now, Florida’s coast might be safe, not because of laws, but because the oil industry isn’t interested. However, that could change.
Some lawmakers are pushing for a permanent drilling ban to protect the Gulf for good. If that happens, maybe Florida will finally get a T-shirt that says, “We Saved the Gulf!”
