Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) has reintroduced the One-Seat-Ride Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at improving the commuting experience for New Jersey residents.
The bill directs the Secretary of Transportation to analyze the cost and benefits of offering a direct “one-seat-ride” option versus the current transfer trip during peak hours on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line.
Addressing Long Commutes and Missed Family Time
Kean emphasized the negative impact of long commutes, stating, “No one should have to switch between multiple trains just to get to New York City.”
He highlighted how these inefficient journeys result in lost time at family events, like kids’ sports and dinners. The study would be the first to examine on a national scale the economic impact of multi-stop train journeys.
What Is the ‘One-Seat-Ride Act’?
The bill, led by Kean and cosponsored by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), aims to find solutions to the challenges of implementing direct rides during peak hours.
The focus is on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line, where passengers currently have to change trains at Newark Penn Station to reach New York City. The same transfer is needed for westbound travel.
How ‘One-Seat-Ride’ Would Change Commuting?

If implemented, the One-Seat-Ride would allow commuters from towns like Westfield, Somerville, and Lebanon to take a direct train into New York City without having to switch trains at Newark.
This would save time and simplify the daily journey for thousands of passengers.

Impact on New Jersey Commuters
The Raritan Valley Line serves over 23,000 daily commuters, many of whom face lengthy commutes due to the required transfer.
Congresswoman Coleman emphasized the need for a more efficient system, stating, “This report is a necessary step towards a system that better serves the hardworking people of New Jersey, allowing them more time with their families.”
A Continuing Effort for Better Transit
Congressman Kean previously introduced the One-Seat-Ride Act in the 118th Congress, where it successfully passed through the House.
By reintroducing the bill, Kean continues his push for improved public transportation, aiming to provide a more convenient and time-efficient commuting option for New Jersey residents.
