Mother-Daughter Duo Allegedly Attempted 5 Times with 3 Toxic Substances Before Fatal Poisoning for Money

The third chemical was the charm in a lethal poisoning plot by an Indiana mother-daughter duo, according to court filings.

Police said that was their fifth attempt.

According to Indiana law enforcement, Harold “Peanut” Allen, 52, was slain with a contemporary, chemical liquid, but his killers first tried more natural, time-tested, and ancient ways.

His obituary claims Allen “passed away suddenly” on Dec. 20, 2022.

But his death was anything but abrupt. According to new Jackson County Sheriff’s Department charges, the man’s lethal poisoning occurred over several months that fall.

In several incriminating emails cited in court documents obtained by Indianapolis-based Fox affiliate WXIN, his since-deceased wife, Marsha Allen, 52, and her daughter, Ashley Jones, 30, who now faces a litany of charges, allegedly planned and executed the plan.

She faces two murder charges, one conspiracy charge, one consumer product tampering charge, and two attempted murder charges.

Jones allegedly ordered pong pong seeds from eBay on Sept. 14, 2022.

Planting the seeds creates a toxic oleander-like tree. Pong pong seeds can kill humans if eaten.

A widely-cited and renowned Harvard study paper found that Madagascar’s “tangena” anti-sorcery social rite used the othalanga fruit’s cerberin-containing seeds for hundreds of years. This “trial by ordeal” involved eating the seeds and dying, making the offender a sorcerer or other criminal. If alive, they were innocent.

Jones and Marsha Allen got pong pong seeds in the mail in October 2022, ground them in a coffee grinder, and added them to brownies on Nov. 26, 2022.

On November 26, Marsha (Allen) sends Jones a photo of Harold (Allen). A half-eaten brownie on a paper plate sits on Harold’s tummy in the photo, court documents read. “Harold got sick after eating the brownie and went to the ER the next day.”

Police said the alleged murderesses complained about the historical Malagasy poison’s efficacy while Harold Allen slowly recovered in and out of a hospital bed.

On Nov. 28, 2022, Marsha Allen texted Jones, “I am irritated and can’t sleep peacefully.” “I need this to end… I wish it will end and climax lol.”

Her daughter allegedly said, “Agreed.”

Harold Allen returned to the emergency room on Nov. 30, 2022, but doctors diagnosed gut irritation.

Undaunted by the man’s recovery, the two allegedly went to a plant with a longer history of annihilating its victims. Ashley Jones bought hemlock on Etsy this time, selecting Socrates’ death penalty for corrupting ancient Athens’ youth.

Marsha Allen and Jones purportedly bought water hemlock, a North American variety, whereas Socrates used poison hemlock, a Greek kind. In very small doses, both plant varieties are toxic and can kill.

Harold Allen survived hemlock poisoning.

Police said the woman received the second poison on Dec. 8, 2022. Three times over four days, they allegedly put hemlock in chili, cola, and margaritas on Dec. 9, 10, and 12, 2022.

Rasputin-like, the victim refused death.

Jones allegedly purchased ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, on Dec. 13, 2022. Ethylene glycol has a pleasant, syrupy taste and is lethal in large doses.

Seven days later, Harold Allen died. The prosecution claims Jones tortured him with each failed attempt.

By Oct. 16, 2023, Marsha Allen would die.

The alleged widow-killer’s home in Freetown, a little census-designated place 40 miles southeast of Bloomington, was burglarized the month prior.

Burglary suspects Steven Andrew White, 29, and Nathaniel Kane Napier, 28, were apprehended. White and Napier did not plan or commit the crime alone. The couple “committed the burglary at the direction of and with the assistance of Marsha’s daughter Ashley Jones,” Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer stated late last year.

The mother informed police she suspected her daughter from the start since the robbers had a gun-safe combination. Jones supposedly knew that code alone.

White informed authorities that Jones had put him and his buddy up to the burglary and that her mother had poisoned Harold Allen.

Marsha Allen refuted the claims and gave police her cellphone, which showed the conspiracy to kill her husband.

Meyer claimed officers found text exchanges between Marsha and Ashley discussing poisoning Marsha’s husband, Harold Allen, in December 2022 on the cell phone.

Jones admitted to “ordering ethylene glycol off the Internet,” but said her mother “had placed the ethylene glycol in Harold’s drink,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The mother’s home was searched weeks after the daughter’s detention in early October 2023. Police believe Marsha Allen committed suicide later that day.

A subsequent investigation revealed Jones’ alleged involvement at a higher level.

Jones allegedly stated a financial motive in texts:

The defendant faces a jury trial on Jan. 7, 2025.
