GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One person is dead and a police officer is in the hospital after being shot by a suspect in Jackson County on Wednesday.
The Jackson Police Department says that the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office told them just after 5 p.m. Wednesday that a person suspected of shooting someone was moving toward Jackson County. It was said that the driver shot their brother less than an hour before.
When JPD officers saw the car, they worked with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to make plans for a stop. When the police tried to pull the driver over, the suspect opened fire and threw bombs from the car. A lot of other cars and homes were hit, but no one on the street was hurt.
At last, a bullet went through the arm and into the body of a JPD sergeant. The cop was taken to the hospital by a deputy from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. He was last described as being in good health.
“The suspect was stopped by officers and deputies who came together.” “Many shots were fired while they were trying to catch him,” the Jackson Police Department said in a statement. “The suspect was shot and knocked out during the exchange of gunfire. No other officers or deputies were hurt.”
“Efforts were made to save the suspect’s life at the scene.” After being taken to Henry Ford Hospital, the suspect was declared dead.
Investigators found several pipe bombs in the suspect’s car. They think the suspect was throwing the bombs at police during the chase.
Police don’t know how many bombs the suspect had, and they said there may have been other devices along the road that didn’t go off.
“Do not pick up these things if you see them.” “Please call 911 so that the right people can be sent to handle the items,” JPD said.
The officer-involved killing is being looked into by the Michigan State Police. As is normal, the deputies and officers who were involved in the killing have been put on administrative leave while investigations are carried out internally.
As of Thursday morning, the JPD had not yet released a public name for the suspect or that person’s brother, who was involved in the first killing.
