A Woman Died When She Backed Into a Plane’s Engine While Taking Pictures

Police say a 37-year-old woman from Kansas died when she backed into a spinning plane’s propeller while trying to take pictures.

According to Air Capital Drop Zone, the photographer Amanda Gallagher was on the plane to take pictures of skydivers on Saturday afternoon. She rode the plane back down after the skydivers jumped.

That afternoon, the plane touched down in Derby, which is outside of Wichita. The next group of jumps then went to the board, according to Air Capital Drop Zone.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the Cessna 182 was on the ground but still going.

“We don’t know why she moved in front of the wing, which is against basic safety rules,” Air Capital Drop Zone said in a statement. “With her camera up to shoot photos as she did so, she stepped back slightly moving toward and into the spinning propeller.”

Police say Gallagher, from Wichita, was taken to the hospital but died from her injuries.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are looking into it.
