Race Day Live Nine teachers from across North Carolina have been named finalists for the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year award.
This award, which started in 1970, recognizes outstanding educators who go above and beyond for their students.
State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green praised the finalists, saying it is important to honor educators who dedicate themselves to shaping the future.
The finalists come from different parts of the state and bring unique teaching styles and experiences.
Rachel Candaso, representing the Northeast region, believes that student success depends on support from the entire community, not just schools.
Hannah Moon, from the Southeast, focuses on making learning meaningful for high school English students. Tamika J. Farmer, from the North Central region, is a strong advocate for mental health awareness in education.
Dr. Anthony Martin, representing the Sandhills region, teaches real-world applications to help students prepare for their futures.
Each of these regional winners has made a lasting impact in their schools and communities. They now move forward in the competition, with the final winner set to be announced on April 11 during a live-streamed awards ceremony.
The event will celebrate not just the finalists but also the hard work of all teachers across North Carolina.
