CHICAGO — On Thursday, a 23-year-old man was sent to jail until his trial for killing Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez.

Darion McMillian went to court in Cook County, which was full of police officials and Martinez’s family members.

Judge Deirdre Dyer said McMillian was a risk to the public.

He is being charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, domestic burglary, and weapons violations.

Martinez, 26, was shot on Monday after he and other police officers stopped a car on the Southside of the city that was stopping traffic. Police Chief Antoinette Ursitti says that while Martinez and his partner were talking to the driver, McMillian, a guy in the front passenger seat, was seen reaching for a bag on the floor.

Ursitti said that when the police told him to stop, the man pulled out a handgun with a machine gun conversion device and an extended clip and fired at Martinez and the driver, hitting both of them.

Soon after, McMillian was caught after a chase and search.

A doctor said that Martinez was dead. Also killed was the driver of the car. A third guy in the back seat of the car was also arrested, but police said he was released after they found he had nothing to do with the shooting.

A public attorney was McMillian’s lawyer in court on Thursday. The public defender’s office did not answer the phone when it was called after work hours on Thursday.

Ursitti said that McMillian was out of jail at the time of the killing because he had been arrested before for trying to cheat on a drug and alcohol test.

The killing is being looked into by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
