2 min read

Race Day Live The bird flu outbreak continues to cause serious damage across the United States, affecting poultry production on a massive scale.

According to the latest data from the CDC and USDA, nearly 135 million birds have been impacted since February 2022, with Iowa, a leading egg producer, being one of the worst-hit states.

In Sioux County, Iowa, more than 12.1 million birds have been affected by the outbreak since November 2023.

Other counties experiencing heavy losses include Weld County, Colorado, with 9.95 million poultry affected, and Merced County, California, with 8.35 million.

On January 17, Georgia health officials announced that poultry sales were being suspended after detecting bird flu in commercial flocks.

Georgia, the top state for chicken production, is now facing a major threat to its economy.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper called the situation critical and assured residents that every effort was being made to contain the spread of the disease and return to normal operations.

Midwestern states are among the hardest hit, with Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, and Nebraska leading in the number of birds affected.

The outbreaks have impacted over 600 counties nationwide, with more than 1,400 incidents reported.

The impact is not limited to poultry. The CDC reports 67 human cases of bird flu in the U.S. since 2024, although public health officials emphasize that the overall risk to the general population remains low. Efforts are underway to monitor and prevent the disease from spreading further.

The economic consequences are also severe, especially for areas heavily reliant on poultry farming.

The halt in poultry sales and the loss of birds are putting immense pressure on local farmers and the national food supply chain.

As the outbreak continues, federal and state officials are focusing on disease control measures to minimize further losses and protect public health.

For now, the bird flu crisis remains one of the most significant challenges facing U.S. agriculture.
