In response to a concerning surge in thefts, a longstanding San Francisco institution, Fredericksen Hardware and Paint, has implemented drastic changes to its customer experience, aiming to curb shoplifting incidents that have plagued the store. Stepping inside, patrons are greeted not only by light bulbs and hardware essentials but also by a table barricading the entrance, adorned with a sign urging visitors to “Please wait for assistance.”
An employee at Fredericksen Hardware explained the rationale behind this new protocol, emphasizing the need to address rampant theft within the establishment. Customers are now vetted by staff upon entry, with employees exercising discretion in determining whether individuals are permitted access. This departure from the traditional shopping experience reflects the store’s urgent efforts to safeguard its merchandise and protect both employees and customers from the dangers posed by brazen theft.
Sam Black, the store’s manager, highlighted the escalation of shoplifting incidents, particularly “snatch and grab” thefts, which prompted the adoption of stricter safety measures. The introduction of barriers like the table at the entrance serves as a deterrent to would-be thieves, aiming to mitigate risks and maintain a secure environment within the store.
Additional precautions include securing merchandise by drilling pots and pans into display walls and locking up items previously left unattended. Such measures, while unfortunate, are deemed necessary to address inventory discrepancies and prevent further losses.
The gravity of the situation extends beyond Fredericksen Hardware, with neighboring businesses also grappling with the fallout of increased crime rates. Mariana Bakana, owner of Bakana retail store, expressed frustration at the lack of recourse for victims of theft, underscoring the broader implications of unchecked criminal activity on local businesses and communities.
Data compiled by ABC7 News reveals a concerning uptick in shoplifting incidents in the Marina neighborhood, where Fredericksen Hardware is located. With 81 larceny-theft incidents reported in 2023 alone, surpassing previous years’ figures, the need for concerted action to address this trend is more pressing than ever.
