A grandmother is in the hospital, and her alleged attacker is dead after a series of events unfolded in San Antonio.
According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), a 42-year-old man rammed his vehicle into his roommate on Saturday evening, then fled the scene. The incident occurred in the 8600 block of Cheviot Heights just before 6:30 p.m.
The victim, identified as 51-year-old Candace Byrnes, was waiting for a friend when she was struck by her roommate’s vehicle.
Her daughter, Ashley Ettner, revealed that Byrnes had met the man about a month ago at the Salvation Army. Ettner expressed her mother’s trust in the wrong person due to her rough circumstances.
Byrnes suffered severe injuries, including two broken bones in her pelvis, two brain bleeds, and required surgery. Despite the ordeal, Ettner described her mother as resilient, cracking jokes and posing for photos even while on life support.
The suspect, identified as Sachin Kumar Sahoo, returned home early Sunday morning, prompting neighbors to call 911. When police arrived, Sahoo allegedly tried to flee and backed his vehicle into two officers. One of the officers then fatally shot Sahoo.

Ettner expressed gratitude for the police’s actions, acknowledging that they did what was necessary to protect her mother. She emphasized Byrnes’s compassionate nature, even feeling remorseful for Sahoo’s death, but ultimately, she’s thankful her mother survived.
The officer involved in the shooting has been with the police force for four years, according to investigators.
