Man Sentenced for Shooting Two St. Louis Officers During Soulard Confrontation

ST. LOUIS – A guy who was found guilty of shooting two St. Louis police officers went before a judge in downtown St. Louis on Friday to find out what would happen to him.

Cortez Darrell Sipes, 38, admitted that he shot and killed St. Louis police officers Sean Miskovic and Lucas Roethlisberger. He also admitted to fighting arrest and drug trafficking. The charges are related to an event that happened on February 2, 2023, in the Soulard area of St. Louis.

Sipes told the judge on Friday that he was sorry for the crimes he had done, and then the judge gave him his term. He was given a 20-year prison term.

Gabe Gore, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney, said that justice was done after the sentencing meeting.

Gore said, “The obvious thing we’re going to do is take very seriously when people hurt or try to hurt police officers in the line of duty.” “Those people will be aggressively prosecuted, and they will be held responsible. That’s what you saw today.”

Police body cameras and dashcams caught the whole thing on video.

Police claimed they tried to stop Sipes late on February 2 evening, but he sped off and the police were forced to chase him. That led to a crash at the Soulard Farmers’ Market.

After that, Sipes got out of his car and started shooting. Both police officers were badly hurt, but they were able to arrest Sipes. The gun Sipes used was a “ghost” gun with an extended clip that can’t be found.
