Who Is Dawn Thornton?

Dawn Thornton, formerly known as Dawn Brown, has built a strong reputation in women’s college basketball—first as a player, now as a coach.

She started her college basketball career at Atlanta Metropolitan College before transferring to Jackson State University, where she contributed to two consecutive SWAC Regular Season Co-Championships. She played 39 games at Jackson State, averaging 1.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

Thornton’s coaching career began at Tougaloo College, where she helped the team reach its best record in 12 years and a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal appearance in 2010.

In 2010, she joined Prairie View A&M as an associate head coach. Her recruiting and player development skills helped produce multiple First Team All-Conference players, two Conference Players of the Year, and two Freshmen of the Year between 2010 and 2014.

She became Prairie View A&M’s head coach in 2013 and led the team to a SWAC Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in her first season. She was named HBCU Coach of the Year and finished her tenure with a 41-51 record.

After coaching at Shorter University, Thornton moved to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) in 2019. In 2023, she led UAPB to a historic 74-70 win over the University of Arkansas—the program’s first victory against the school.

During the 2023-24 season, Thornton led UAPB to a fourth-place finish in the SWAC with a 17-16 overall record.
