Race Day Live The fight against illegal drugs has been going on for decades, but the problem still exists, and law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on offenders.
A Michigan man recently learned this the hard way when he received a long prison sentence for drug-related crimes.
Michael Warren Smith Jr. was sentenced to 327 months—over 27 years—for drug trafficking charges. Authorities found him guilty of possessing and selling large amounts of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine.
His case became a major example of law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to stop the illegal drug trade.
Officials executed search warrants at two locations tied to Smith—one on Elmwood Street and another at an apartment on West Main Street in Kalamazoo.
During the searches, authorities found six pounds of meth, nearly 700 grams of fentanyl, over 470 grams of cocaine, and five loaded firearms. Along with these, they recovered additional evidence pointing to a large-scale drug operation.
The case was a high priority for multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET), and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

With their combined efforts, they could shut down Smith’s operation and secure a lengthy sentence.
Officials leading the investigation expressed their satisfaction with the outcome. The captain of KVET and the ATF’s Special Agent in Charge for Detroit both emphasized that the lengthy sentence sends a strong message to others involved in illegal drug activity.
They hope this will serve as a warning that drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession carry serious consequences.
