Over the weekend, a hundred volunteers joined forces to pack 10,000 meals for families in need across Central Florida. This yearly event, organized by the Heart of Florida United Way, took place around Valentine’s Day as a gesture of love and support for the community.
The Heart of Florida United Way, known for its commitment to community service, arranged the event to help families facing difficulties in the region. Lynnea Crawford, the vice president of donor and volunteer experiences at Heart of Florida United Way, emphasized the event’s significance in bringing people of all ages together to support their community.
The meals, consisting of red lentil jambalaya, will be distributed to four Central Florida agencies: the Coalition for the Homeless, Christian Help, Meals on Wheels, and United Against Poverty. Each agency plays a crucial role in providing shelter, rebuilding efforts, and nutritious meals to those in need.
Among the agencies, the Coalition for the Homeless is rebuilding after a fire damaged their shelter. The meals not only offer nourishment but also a sense of community support during these challenging times.
Ashley Blasewitz, the senior vice president of donor and volunteer experiences at Heart of Florida United Way, highlighted the importance of teaching children about different circumstances and the value of giving back. She shared her experience of volunteering with her eight-year-old son, Braxton, as a meaningful lesson in understanding and empathy.
The red lentil jambalaya meals, simple to prepare with just a pot of boiling water, provide families with nutritious and health-centric options. Families can also customize the meals based on their preferences and tastes.

In packing the meals, Braxton Blasewitz, one of the young volunteers, had a heartfelt message for the families receiving the support: “My message is I hope you feel better with this meal.”
