Deli Emergency: 10,000 lbs of Meats Recalled Over Contamination Concerns!

3 min read

In a recent development, approximately 9,330 pounds of ready-to-eat deli meats are being recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) due to contamination concerns.

The issue came to light when a sample of the deli meats collected by a state public health partner tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. These deli meats, produced by Don Novo & Son in Miami, Florida, are supplied to popular supermarkets such as Publix, Winn Dixie, Bravo, and others.

The recall affects products manufactured on December 21, 2023, including “Don Novo CHORIZO FULLY COOKED,” “Don Novo COSTILLAS AHUMADAS SMOKED PORK RIBS,” “Don Novo JAMON DULCE SWEET COOKED HAM AND WATER PRODUCTS,” “Don Novo MORTADELLA CUBANA CUBAN BRAND MORTADELA,” and “Don Novo LOMO AHUMADO SMOKED PORK LOIN.”

These items were shipped to retail locations in Florida and bear the establishment number “EST. 34257” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Despite Don Novo & Son’s previous implementation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (H.A.C.C.P.) program and daily U.S.D.A. inspections to ensure food safety, a sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them, and instead, they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection, especially for older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

In pregnant women, the infection can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns. Antibiotic treatment is necessary, and individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms after consuming the contaminated food should seek medical attention.

FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled products may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, as the best-by dates extend to the end of March. Routine recall effectiveness checks are conducted by FSIS to ensure that recalling firms notify their customers and take steps to remove the product from the market.
