An arrest warrant has been issued for a Washington Heights landlord, Daniel Ohebshalom, due to horrendous living conditions reported by tenants. Residents complained of massive wall cracks, sewage leaks, and rampant trash accumulation in the buildings located at 705 and 709 170th Street.
Tenants described the situation as dire, with over 700 violations documented at the properties. Nelly, a resident, revealed shocking images of rat-infested kitchens, falling plaster, and faeces leakage from the apartment above hers.
The city finally took action after years of failed attempts to compel Ohebshalom to address the issues. Adolfo Carrion Jr., the commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, labelled Ohebshalom the “worst landlord in New York City,” citing $3 million in fines and penalties.
Officials announced that Ohebshalom will face a 60-day jail sentence and be sent to Rikers Island. Assembly Member Tony Simone expressed relief at the city’s intervention, condemning Ohebshalom as a criminal and slumlord.
Ohebshalom, currently in California, is being pursued for extradition. Despite attempts to reach him for comment, calls to his offices went unanswered.
