San Diego’s Unemployment Rate Holds Steady Amid Statewide Increase

Despite a rise in unemployment rates statewide, San Diego County has managed to maintain its unemployment rate, according to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

As of February 2024, California’s unemployment rate has climbed to 5.3% from 5.2% the previous month, marking a slight increase. The statewide unemployment rate stood at 5.1% from October through December.

Locally, the unemployment rate in San Diego County was recorded at 4.7% in January, as per the latest available BLS figures. This remained unchanged from December’s rate of 4.3%.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported that San Diego’s unemployment rate in February remained stagnant at 4.7%, with approximately 76,100 individuals classified as unemployed.

Preliminary data from the BLS revealed that around 75,821 individuals were unemployed in San Diego County in January, compared to 68,205 individuals the previous month.

Certain industries in San Diego County experienced declines in their percentage changes from February of the previous year, including manufacturing (-2.8%), trade, transportation, and utilities (-0.2%), information (-5.4%), financial activities (-2.9%), and professional and business services (-3.2%).

Despite the overall rise in unemployment rates, some industries reported slight positive changes from the same month the previous year. These industries included education and health services (6.3%), leisure and hospitality (3.1%), government (2.3%), other services (2.3%), and construction (1.5%).

However, there was a slight decrease in the number of Americans signing up for unemployment benefits nationwide last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, indicating a positive trend in the job market across the country.
